V has been dealing with the consequence of the safe and effective for over a year now and is slowly making progress in her healing.
V hopes that by sharing her story, she can raise awareness: “If my story can help someone to make the right decision, then it’s worth sharing”.
If you would like to reach out to V, please do so through the comments below. Thank you, Granny V, for being brave and for being our first Mzansi story!
Hi, my name is V (pseudonym). I am a wife, mother and grandmother to four children and nine beautiful grandchildren. I recently turned 72. I consider myself healthy, even though I have had glaucoma for the past 12 years and I am on blood pressure medication. Both of these conditions are stable, and I have no issues with either. The Glaucoma I have did not deteriorate to the extent that was expected due to my careful monitoring and maintenance of my condition. I have eye appointments with the ophthalmologist every six months to ensure that the Glaucoma is monitored, and the condition of my eyes does not worsen.
I got the first Pfizer in July 2021 and the second in September 2021. I believed the jab was safe and effective. I didn’t think it would have any effect on me, but my right eye is now damaged. I got the jab because my son lives overseas and my one daughter was planning on migrating, and at the time, the jab was mandated for travel. I really wanted to see my family. My son and his family are not jabbed so at the time I thought that because I’m older and have lived most of my life, if anything went wrong, rather me’ than them.
About two or three days after the second jab, my right eye was very sore. This may sound strange, but it felt like I had a headache in my eye. The pain was about an 8 out of 10. I took two Disprin but that did nothing. I then took two Myprodol, and that eased the pain.
I then noticed that I would see a big red patch when I woke in the morning. When I covered my left (good) eye I saw this red patchy circle. A few days later I started seeing lines in the tiles – they were “snaking”. A day after that I saw double of everything and the following day it progressed into seeing three of everything and then four on that same day. A funny-not-funny story was that I was leaving my one daughter’s house and she could see that something was “off”. I got into the car and started reversing out of the driveway, but I couldn’t see properly and had to stop. I would have driven into the gate! She called to me when she saw how I was driving. She said I nearly drove into the wall! She asked me what was wrong because it was obvious that there was, and I told her that I couldn’t see properly.
I then made an urgent appointment with my ophthalmologist. When I met with him later that week (two weeks after my second jab), I told him that I thought my condition was related to the jab. He didn’t respond directly to that statement. He said that he “couldn’t comment because nobody is quite sure about what has been going on”. He examined my eyes and noticed a bleed in my right eye. He was concerned and said that what happened to my eye was chronic. I was scared and asked him if I could go blind.
He said that he wasn’t sure and couldn’t give a firm answer to the question but reiterated that my condition was chronic. He diagnosed me with a burst vein in my eye (retinal vein), and blood was pooling in my eye, which was causing my vision problem. I lost about 50% of my vision, which was very evident to me – I really couldn’t see well.
I’ve read and heard that the jab attacks the weak spots in people, so that’s what leads me to believe that the jab caused me damage. My right eye is my weak spot. And up until my second jab, I had been doing fine.
I am being treated by my ophthalmologist at various intervals. I always have a scan at my appointments and then I get two injections directly into my eye. This happened at my first appointment. I have had another five appointments since then, and 12 injections in total so far. I am due for another appointment this month. At each appointment, the ophthalmologist schedules the next appointment, so they vary in how frequently I have them, some with a three-week interval, some four, some six – it all depends on my scan. In my most recent appointment, he commented that all the congealed blood had disappeared, so that’s good news. When the substance is injected into my eye, it bubbles, which I can see in my eye. I have recovered about 80% of my
sight in that eye, which has taken over a year to do. My last bit of sight is taking a while to recover. My case is chronic and my treatment is being covered by my medical aid.
The other treatment I have tried is pine needle tea. My daughter-in-law sent this to me and I started taking it about four months ago. The specialist commented that he was surprised at how well my eye was healing after I started taking the tea, so my healing might be partly attributed to the tea. I am also taking spirulina now, and although it’s early days, I am noticing that my vision is improving.
My message is if you have any underlying problems or conditions, I would not recommend having the jab. I won’t be having another one.
